19th C. period framed Watercolour J Laurence Hart

19th C. period framed Watercolour J Laurence Hart

£225

J Laurence Hart (1850-1907) Watercolour Painting “A Nook in the Woods on the River Leam” dating we believe to around 1885. (the river is south of Rugby and probably painted when Hart resided in Rugby)

This is a spellbinding and truly evocative original watercolour painting with a real depth and presence. It is one of the best period watercolours we have had the pleasure of acquiring for some time, the colours are rich and well defined, the highlights are excellent and there is little evidence of natural fading or light damage.

Painted by J Laurence Hart (1850-1907) it is undated. A fragment of the original pencil inscriptions from a verso label, by the artist, has been taped to a new back paper lining with title of the painting.

The Artist's signature is bottom left of the painting slightly obscured by the gold slips.

The painting is framed in a wooden with black moulding (it isn't gesso, we believe it is a twentieth century replacement frame that has kept true to the period of the painting).

J Laurence Hart (1850-1907) Born in Harborne, Birmingham, was both a poet and an artist. He painted mainly watercolours of landscapes and rural scenes in the Impressionist style. At least 90 of his works were exhibited in London, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham during his lifetime, and he was a regular contributor to the RBSA. Hart had addresses in Birmingham, Rugby and Morfa Nefyn, North Wales .

Condition: Painting in excellent, the frame has two small areas of damage, one nick to the black surface top right corner and another one centre bottom of the surface.
