his is a good size well crafted original Victorian oil on canvas is dated 1882, the landscape depicts a stretch of river, probably the Thames, as Samuel Bateman lived and worked in and around Oxfordshire most of his life. Bateman was an English professional artist, he appears in national census in and around Henley-on-Thames recorded working as a landscape painter it is understood he did have at least one painting exhibited at the Royal Academy.
The painting is in a loose style quite widely used by Victorian painters particularly the rural subjects. It does however result in a evocative image.
SIZE: Overall frame 26 inches wide by 18 inches high ---- Canvas: 18 inches wide by 10 inches high.
The painting and frame are all original and contemporary to each other. The canvas is in good condition, there are no holes etc. The painted surface is bright crisp and without any losses, cracking etc. The original period frame is gesso and does show its age, typical cracks to the plaster and there are small losses. Other than the superficial the frame has no issues, it is tight and solid, the canvas is fully secured.
