Stuart Crystal Mid Century Square Glass Fruit / Centre Dish
£40.00
Vintage Square Fruit / Centre Dish by Stuart Crystal
This is a fine clear crystal square fruit / centre bowl made for Stuart Glass and signed "Stuart Crystal", which follows an earlier 1950s design called "Prism" by John Luxton.
A fine pattern - with a repeat of stylized flower heads. The engraved pattern is a very busy one and covers the whole of the bowl. It is in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. It has a thick lip and a plain footed base.
John Luxton (1920 - 2013) was only 16 when he attended Stourbridge School of Art where he first became interested in glass. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London but his first term was interrupted by war. Luxton was called up to join the army - he served in Egypt, Iraq and Italy before being demobbed in Germany in 1946. After the war, he returned to the Royal College and in 1949 he joined Stuart Crystal where he remained until his retirement in 1985.
John Luxton sadly remains a very much an undervalued designer. However, his illustrious career with Stuart Crystal was instrumental in changing the face of British glass design in the post-war years.
A very substantial piece of vintage crystal which is 8.75 inches square and 4.25 inched in height.
