19th Century Islamic Copper and Silver Footed Tray
A rare design of middle eastern metal art , practical and beautiful.
Superb quality 19th century Middle Eastern/Islamic decorative tray /plate, the style and form suggests a date circa c1875. This is a quality heavy gauge piece , well cast and heavy for its 25 cm diameter size (550g). It has scalloped edges and intricate silver inlay decoration and sits on three dome shaped feet (this suggests a tray or item for serving rather than plate. It is profusely decorated with an interesting central motif of a prancing Arabian Gazelle, which in traditional themes of Arabic love poetry involves comparing the gazelle with the beloved, and linguists theorise 'ghazal', the word for love poetry in Arabic, is related to the word for gazelle .
Overall condition is excellent and benefits from a beautiful patina, clean and bright surface and mellow age to the underside. It sits perfectly and has no dings or bends in the metal with only minor surface wear / rubbing.
