Hindu Bronze Figure on Horseback

Hindu Bronze Figure on Horseback

£135

Bronze Horse & Khandoba From The Deccan - 19thC

This form of Indian cast bronze figure is of the Hindu deity Khandoba on horseback and dates to the late 19th century. A similar earlier example of this figure can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Khandoba is a warrior manifestation of Shiva most often worshipped in central and southern India reputedly from the Deccan Plateau, and more specifically Southern Maharashtra or Karnataka.

Khandoba is cast in situ and not detachable from the horse..

The condition overall is excellent with a patina commensurate with age. There are only five of the six bells remaining, one has been lost over the century.
