19th Century French Ormolu and Glass Casket
£245
Antique French beveled Glass, Gold Ormolu, an unusual size 5 inch Jewelry Casket, dating to circa 1890. This is five beveled glass panels with the lid having an under-glass original coloured image of the Trocadero Palace -( Opposite the Eiffel Tower) - the palace was built to showcase Paris for the exhibition in 1878- named after the Battle of Trocadero in the 1800s Napoleonic Wars. This palace no longer exists -It is now called the Place du Trocadero and from this plaza one sees across to the Eiffel Tower.
Inside is the original gold cotton fabric, button down and stuffed upholstered cushion base.
The size is worth noting as it is larger than the more common examples of this type of box. overall width is 13.5 cm: depth is 8.5 cm: height including feet 8 cm.
The condition of this example is very good, there are none of the usual dings to the glass, the fabric isn't shredded , the hinges and clasp are all sturdy, and functioning exactly as one would hope. The gilding isn't as new perfect it shows it does have wear commensurate with age ,but compared to many others of similar age and design it is very good.
