Pair of French Marble & Ormolu Candelabra
£425
A fine pair of five branch gilded bronze candelabra on marble plinth and urn base. French and dating to circa 1870 (late Napoleon 111 era). These garniture sets are designed with flat backs to the plinth, making it practical for them to be placed on a wide mantel piece or a console, side table or similar.
This pair are ornate whilst being restrained in their design, the plain black marble plinth has small inlay panels of Breche Rouge French red marble which in turn have chased and gilded decoration which flanks the central carved out of the black, and gilded foliate decoration. The urn and cover that forms the pedestal of the candle holders is a plain carved black marble and gilded bronze mount combination, at the base an acanthus leaf foot, rising to a plain but shaped stem closing to the base of the black cup, the handles are typical period swan neck shape and the closing cover is again in gilded bronze shaped as a cup and cover urn would be. From the centre of the cover the main 'trunk' of the candle holders rises to hold four lower outstretched arms with candle sockets and drip pans finely formed and chased decorated. The central core terminates as a fifth candle sconce above the four arms.
The condition of this pair is excellent. The ormolu is unworn, the arms are all firm and properly connected, the legs are all in place and undamaged in any way. The marble urns are in fine order and the attached gilt handles in place and without issue. The plinths are fine, the inlay and gilded carved decor is also in first class order. There is only one tiny nick to the rear of one base plinth , minor and does not detract from the excellent overall condition of these two pieces.
Size: Overall height is 50 cm (19 3/4 inches), the base in 12 cm wide, 10 cm deep and height 8 cm. (Unpacked weight is 2.76 kg each).
