Victorian Coromandel Casket & Miniature Decanters
£795
Circa 1890, a fine locking, diminutive, Coromandel decanter box of Lancet form. Inside a blue silk lining, along with a blue velvet fitted interior containing two original small cut crystal decanter bottles and stoppers. The content and purpose of this set is most likely for valued cologne, however it may have been used for any prized liquid, cosmetic or alcohol.
This is a high quality item, the use of Coromandel being a sign of such. The cut crystal bottles also benefit from cutting and polishing normally associated with the best of table top and drinks cabinet glassware. The neck and shoulder of the bottle is a concave panel cut terminated by a horizontal 'v' cut atop a wide band of fine vertical cuts which is repeated around the base with a middle section of hobnail design. It is a really excellent example of the finesse of a cutter, the symmetry and geometry is of the highest standard. The stoppers are also cut and there is a air inclusion in the form of an inverted teardrop.
The bottles and interior are original to the box, there is a right place for each individual bottle, and the fit is perfect. The close retention of the flasks plus tight fitting lid may indicate an item designed for travel, although we would anticipate a more liquid tight seal on the bottle if travel was the principle purpose.
The furniture is all brass , the key is a plain steel one and may be a replacement, although it works the lock fine. The hinges are substantial and hold the top open without issue at the 90 degrees. The silk lining is original and shows its age, worn to the top edge and slightly marked to the inside of the lid, the tops of the decanters have made their mark over time and the lining has been worn away and the wood exposed, it is an honest sign of age and originality.
The overall condition of this piece is very good, apart from the note above there are no issues to report. There is a non original dark blue baize to the underside. The crystal is also bright clear and clean with no chips nor cracks etc.
Size: the box has an overall base of 6 inches by 3 3/4 inches and a height to tip of lancet of 6 inches, each bottle is 5 1/8 inches high.
We have lightly cleaned this box, we have not undertaken any restoration it is offered in as near original condition as possible, allowing for its age and usage.
