Circa 1880 Mauchline Cribbage Board

Circa 1880 Mauchline Cribbage Board

£95

Original antique Mauchline Ware Cribbage Board with views of Stratford Upon Avon dating to circa 1880.

It measures 9¾ inches x 2¾ inches x just under ½ inch approx.

Lovely piece of social History. Sold to Tourists in the latter part of the 19th Century, Mauchline ware of this period were usually Transfer printed with a scene from popular Towns, cities, monuments etc. In this instant the views are of Church of the Holy Trinity in Stratford on Avon, as well as William Shakespeare's house.

Invariably made of Sycamore wood, Mauchline ware came in many forms, usually square boxes of various sizes, book covers, page turners etc. In this case it is a games related item, namely a cribbage board.

Condition:
Structurally in excellent condition for its age, there are the normal (and to be expected) signs of use, there is a short partial depth and yet unopened split at one end of the playing board (not having any effect of the board other than its a visible line. The original leather base is still in situ, the usual varnish crazing is light but as expected present. It has been very lightly cleaned and retains its age and use patina, we would tend not to go beyond this point there is nothing to beat the layers of patina which have built up over the last 130-140 years.
