Circa 1940 Domino and Cribbage Set

Circa 1940 Domino and Cribbage Set

£145

A set of 28 Bakelite Dominoes with the Wills Capstan Cigarettes emblem (a desirable set on their own) contained in a period made mahogany hinged case/box with the addition of a brass cribbage board mounted on black wood base. The box and content all date to the 1940's, we suspect this set has been put together, possibly during the wartime, as a combination games set. It is reminiscent of items kept in a military mess.

The box is purpose made rather than factory produced, nicely put together, solid and workmanlike, jointed end panels set into a fully routed top and bottom, built to be able to withstand a possibly hard life. The cribbage board is a thick brass plate, it has been polished to leave a fish scale pattern in the surface. mounted on to its wooden base with slotted brass screws, it would appear to be an individual workshop piece.

This is very much a period piece of social history, it is all in great condition, the dominoes are all free of damage and wear, the brass board is undamaged (there are no pegs, we suspect this piece was probably played using matchsticks), the inner lining of the box is undamaged but does show its age, (see photos). The black base is rubbed but undamaged. The brass is properly mounted and secure. The box is in good order, has signs of use and age, the only issue is the loss of one original closure clip (despite the loss the box secures really well.)

Size: the box is 16 1/2 inches long 4 3/4 inches deep and 1 1/2 inches thick
the brass board is 8 inches long by 2 inches wide and is quite thick at 3/8th inch.
Dominoes are all 1 7/8th inches long by 7/8th inches wide and 1/4 inch thick
