Late 19th Century Lidded Tankard
£195
A superb example of a large covered tankard with Lion and shield finial
Dating to circa 1880, this is a late Victorian high quality and large tankard. The crossed keys impressed mark to the underside is most likely attributed to John Nowill & Sons (1842 - 19320) Sheffield there is no surrounding shield to the impressed which would have suggested the alternate Sheffield maker - Henry Wilkinson & Co (1828 -1891).
The hinged lid is decorated with a fine cast Lion and Shield Finial along with a furled ribbon form thumb piece. The body is typical of the period with detailed and well executed engraved bands of foliate decor. The body and shield remain clean and clear of ownership armorials etc. The silver plate is in first rate order (inside and outside), this is a genuinely high quality item, a good gauge of metal and a fine Silver plate finish.
It stands 9 inches overall height and has a base diameter of 5.5 inches. As to volume, it is a classic 2 pint tankard.
Condition is excellent.
