Silver Plate Cream and Sugar Stand

Silver Plate Cream and Sugar Stand

£95

An Edwardian Creamer and Sugar bowl on stand in quality silver plate with marks for George Bowen and Sons from Birmingham. This dates to circa 1905. These are sometimes described as strawberry sets, and there is no reason why they should not be the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of fruit however they are more strictly a cream and sugar set.

This is a fine and elaborate design, ball feet on a frill edged base tray supporting swept two part handles that in turn rest a smaller plate echoing the base as well as two ball end arms to hold the creamer in place. Each of the plates has central sockets to fit the bowl and jug into. The two serving pieces are scalloped and gadrooned taking them squarely away from the ordinary.

The size is good , whether used for tea coffee or strawberries it has a good scale. It measures overall height 16 cm and maximum width 19 cm. The jug is 7.5 cm diameter and 4.5 cm high (excluding handle and spout) the bowl is 11 cm wide and 5 cm high.

All three parts of this combination are marked G.B & S in a shield (maker) with a griffin and EP as well as 1 (usually for the grade of plate applied) along with a model mark 4847.

The condition is excellent, no issue to report, the frame the items and the plate are A1. there is a locating nut to the underside that is missing, however this actually hasn't affected the piece
